Site Update - 30 October 2009
Changing Planet ESJ
What do you think of the changes to Planet ESJ? The news page is now on the main website, but everything else is where it usually is. A new forum about changes you might like to happen on Planet ESJ has just started. Why not contribute your views? You will only get what you want if you ask!
File Store
Something new that you should find useful is the File Store. You can find it in Main Menu. You could use it to transfer files between home and school. It will also be useful if you want to save a file because you have logged in as the wrong user (year group rather than personal log-in, or vice versa). You can also use it to transfer a file to a work partner. They log in to the server then you log in at Planet ESJ and save the file into their My Documents.
Photography Club
Recently, we have been taking portrait photographs. The photo of Sam was taken at our last meeting. More pictures have been added to the portrait gallery this week. Why not take a look?
Have a look at our photographs.
Club members can upload their best photographs to the image gallery - one of the advantages of being a club member.

An Excellent Art Website
Before I forget, I've found yet another cartooning website. Find it here...
Click for a bigger image.
Why not have a go and send it in to Planet ESJ? You can print the screen then paste it into a paint program and save as a gif or Jpeg.
Actually the site, called Artisancam, is about much more than just cartoons. You can see famous artists like Anthony Gormley and Andy Goldsworthy at work and have a go yourself! So if art is your thing, then be sure to check out Artisancam.
You can view some of Mr Firth's class's self-portrait work from last term here...
| Resize your photos with this cool tool. |
So you need to resize a photo or other graphic for the website?. Here's how...
- upload your image (5Mb size limit) - it will appear in two versions (where the ducks are)
- quite likely the default settings will suit you, but you can adjust the width of the optimised image if you need a larger image for your page
- you can crop your image or convert it to black and white (or sepia, even)
- you can add a border if you like, or some white padding
- below your optimised image is the blue text 'download this image' - click and save the image on your local machine
- upload your optimised image to the website in the normal way
- you can get more information if you click 'webresizer' at the bottom of the page
P.S. This is a good way to optimise a graphic to send in an email attachment
I've found yet another really good cartooning website. Click here...
You can make comic strips using a range of superhero-type characters. No end to the possibilities. Why not have a go and send in your strip? Instead of printing it Just print the screen and paste it into a paint program, then save it as a gif or jpeg.
Want to make cartoon strips like this one? I made this on a website called www.pixton.com.
You have to sign up to use the site, and so I strongly suggest you ask an adult if this is OK.
For one thing you will need a non-school email address for the return your membership details.
I saw the website recommended in a teachers' magazine and they do deals for schools. It seems OK to me, but no guarantees, so ask an adult first!
Stop press!
i have found a second website that lets you make cartoon strips, called MakeBeliefComix. Follow the link and give it a try!
Internet Safety
Do you use the internet a lot or a little? What do you do online - email, chat, message, or just surf?
The internet is great - but it is also full of pitfalls and dangers for the unwary - inexperienced children in particular. Things are not always what they seem...
So, how much do YOU know about keeping safe online?
Play the Cybercafé game and find out!
