Year 5 Poetry

intro

highwayman

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

For the past few years, as part of literacy, Year 5 have made a detailed study of this epic narrative poem. It is always popular as a focus for study, with its hugely dramatic themes of love, murder, jealousy and betrayal.

The poem is long and really amounts to a short story, and although it is accessible to children at every level provides enough 'meat' for even very able children to be inspired.
