Year 5 News

1-19They don't let us out much, so on Thursday 14th January Year 5 combined a visit to the Magistrate's Court with one to Ely Museum, and made a day of it.

At the museum Sally Austin, the museum's Education Officer, led us through a fascinating journey back in time to the year 1816, the time of the Littleport Riots. She and her co-workers stayed in role throughout and brought to life the dramatic events of the night of May 22nd. Click the Read More below for an image gallery.

What fascinated the children most were the conditions that prisoners had to live under in those days (pretty awful), plus the hangings of course which held the boys' interest particularly, as you might imagine. Did you know the gallows was in St John's Road?

The children had the Riot Act read to them by Reverend Vachell (in role), even though they were being quite well behaved at the time.

On the return leg of our walk we stopped off  at St Mary's churchyard and saw the plaque on the church wall that commemorates the event and the sad fate of the five men who were hanged.
