In the last part of term Mr Firth's class made a study of the short film 'The Piano' by Aidan Gibbons. If you don't know the movie it is well worth watching and can be found here...

We watched The Piano many times to absorb just how the story was so effectively told in film with only the music for accompaniment. We learned film language and how to
Our very own Beatles tribute band, 'The Fab 3', were available for interview just before the end of term. They talked about their music and what was going to be happening in the future.
Sadly, their stick man Chandler is moving on to college in September, but that coud provide a chance for one of you to get involved in the band next year.

This was one emotional assembly! Short, but kind of sweet, might summarise it. There were few dry eyes in the parents' section of the audience, nor the teachers', come to that. What shone through the whole performance by our leaving Year 6 was how well this year group actually get on together - they really do like one another!

Well done to you all.
Both Foundation classes had a fantastic day out at the farm. As you can see from the photos, Mrs Powell's enjoyed stroking and feeding the animals and playing on the various equipment.

Something new for our school website is a comment system. No doubt you will have seen similar features on some newspaper websites. Comments allow you to say what you think about different articles on the site and are an easy way for you to get involved and give us feedback.
Of course, registration will be a requirement before you can add any comments. Registration is open to anyone who has a legitimate interest in the Ely St John's learning community, and that will include parents, teachers, governors and others who have a strong connection to our school.
By September we will have a system set up for interested adults to apply for registration. School staff are already registered and should feel free to try out this new feature. Watch this space for updates.
On Thursday 1st July both Year 2 classes (with the kind support of some Year 6 students and parent helpers) took the coach to Hunstanton. We were really lucky with the weather and could enjoy lovely spells of sunshine and warm temperatures at the

In Old Hunstanton we used our buckets and spades to build some fantastic sandcastles and sand statues. We also had a little paddle in the sea water, which was really cold!
We have had another successful term of choir club and we have really enjoyed singing together and playing games. In the summer, we try to get outside to play musical games and we sing rounds, part songs, funny songs and serious stuff too.
One of the songs we have tried singing this term is the song Two Little Birds by Bob Marley. It has a reggae rhythm and a summery feel. Here is a recording of the choir singing it.
During Year 4's Monks Day at Ely Cathedral during “Going Green” week, we became Tudor monks for a day.
It was a hard life as monks had to pray 7 times a day, the first at 2 o’clock in the morning!
We sampled their simple meals of potage, fruit and bread and found out about the jobs they did in a typical day.
We decided that we were glad to live in 2010!

On Monday, the first ‘Going Green’ day I walked into school with a big grin on my face – I was really excited! In the afternoon I enjoyed my miniature garden.
On Tuesday we split into our family groups. In my group we each had a buddy – older partnered with younger, younger with older. I was with a year 1, Evie. Together we: made a mini scarecrow, played dress the scarecrow on the computer and made the neck for our class’s scarecrow, it was fantastic!
Mrs Powell’s class were really lucky and had a visit from
They brought lots of plants with them and helped the children to plant them in the allotment.
They then went into the classroom and made some salad bowls with fresh salad that
You can see them planting sweetcorn, leeks and lettuces.
During Go Green Week Ely St John's was lucky enough to have a visit from the author Paul Shipton. Paul also writes under the name of Paul Cooper, if you are looking him up on Amazon.
Paul began the day with an assembly for Key Stage 2, where he introduced himself and talked about the way he writes and the kind of books he has had published. Nobody managed to guess the number of words in his shortest book, because the correct answer was zero!
