In year 2 we have been reading the BFG. Today we watched the film and then spent the day doing different activities like making stuff. We have really enjoyed it.
The BFG has big ears and does not eat human beans like the other giants do. Did you know he says people from
In Foundation Stage we have decided that cardboard boxes are brilliant! They can be cars, trains and rockets. They can be caves, castles and puppet theatres. You can turn them into models, you can make music with them and you can even wear them on your head. We have been using boxes in our play all week and have found lots of imaginative ways to transform them into different things. One of our favourite activities has been creating small world scenes inside a box and then using them as a ‘stage’ to tell stories. Some exciting things have been happening inside our boxes which have been filled with everything from pirates to fairies to dinosaurs.
Take a look at the pictures to see some of our work. Can you spot the box that has been turned into a chocolate monster?!

We made pirate things out of paper. We made parrots and pirate hats and eye patches and cutlasses. Then we used them to be pirates and act out stories and it was fun saying ‘Arrrr’ like a pirate.
We filled our marble jar and we got a treat. We picked the dressing up box and we dressed up in different clothes and Bethan was a pirate and Louise was a princess and other people were knights and dragons.
We heard a poem about Percy the pirate and it was funny because he has very smelly feet. And we read a story about Gilbert the Great and now we have the cd in the book corner and we can listen to it.
Last Thursday we visited Ely Library. It was a bit wet but we still managed to have fun! Louise the children’s librarian showed us around the children’s section and explained how we could use our library cards to borrow books. We had to take the book and our card to Boris the Library Computer so that he would know which book we had chosen to take home. We found out that the library also has story-tapes, CDs and DVDs. We had time to explore the books, read stories and sit in the pirate ship before it was time to walk back to school.
A big thank you to Louise and to all the parent helpers for making our trip such a success. We are looking forward to our next outing already!
Edward and Gabriella were making patterns with the fish. They’re getting them into groups of the same.

People were making patterns with the vehicles. We’re good at making repeating patterns and we tried to use 3 colours.
We blowed paint and it made bubbles and the bubbles popped and made paint splashes and patterns. It was brilliant. The paint was going on the paper and it made bubble shapes on the paper.
On Tuesday 24th April Year 5 had a visit from the Cambridgeshire Environmental Education Service in the person of Nicky Ayscough, who led sessions for both classes on the very topical subject of renewable energy. Nicky explained some of the ways that electricity is generated and taught the children a mime that went through the stages of power generation using coal and wind power.

Children got to make up a working model wind electricity generator and tested it for efficiency
On Friday the 23rd of March, Year 6 girls took part in a football tournament at Ely collage with two other schools (the Lantern and Milfields primary schools).
All three schools were very competitive, and played brilliantly, and were trying their best to gain the glory.
Firstly, we started with some warm ups with the year 10’s, then we played some games against each other before the tournament began.
There were 3 games going on at once, Ely St Johns A v Milfields A primary and Lantern A Ely St Johns B v Lantern primary school B and Milfields B, and Ely St Johns C v Lantern C and D.
As a result, Ely St Johns won! We all enjoyed it very much and most of us can’t wait to go back soon for a re-match.

We had great fun completing our Sport Relief mile on Monday 26th March. Year groups chose their own way to achieve it including running, crawling, hopping, cartwheeling and a conga!
Thank you for all your donations. Adding these to the items sold means we raised a grand total of £258. Well Done!
