I wake only to find dolphins effortlessly skimming over the endless ocean in front of what looked like a sky painted with oil pastels; suddenly I think of my mother. Dolphins were always her favourite animal. She must be so lonely with no husband or son but I know she will get over it. She gets over it every year. After all she has my little sister, maybe it’s nice without boys in the way. Suddenly my thoughts are interrupted by men shouting at each other on the other boats, but then suddenly I feel my father’s hand on my shoulder. It is time.
When I splash into the water its like I have entered another world. Fish of all colours brush past me. Its just like a magical world. Much better than I expected and I expected it to be wonderful. Father lets go of my hand so he can be free to search for pearls. It is even lovelier being able to swim freely. I don’t feel like me , maybe like a twisted human being, half man half fish. suddenly I get a huge mouthful of seaweed and water. Then I get a glimpse of the thing pearl fishers fear most… a stinging devilfish! they are the most wonderful and surprisingly majestic creature in the whole ocean. My stomach is getting tight so I will have to go and return to the boat.
When I come up, out of the water gasping for air I find father already eating his tiny snack of a few prunes. So that was it, my first dive.
