The little boy finished his letter to his dad and climbed into bed and kissed his mum goodnight. The house was all quiet with the moonlight shining until there was a scratchy, scratchy sound in the room – the pencil was writing by itself. "I remember the shop where I was sold. I was in a box with many other pencils just like me."
And the penny said "We had it tough. All of them purses I've been in and one I remember being in the queen's purse at one stage and look how much I've paid for."
Then the axe came in to the conversation. "Look how many trees I've chopped down and how many people who have used me."
"And then look at that boy, all cosy in bed, with a lovely mother and he gets so many presents. And look how lucky he is when it's his birthday."
Then it's all quiet again in the workshop.
