For many years I have lain in the dark. My companions have been a coin, a football and a pencil and paper. Oh, the tales they told! The coin when he bought a football. "The football came from an animal," said the coin.

Yes, that's right," said the football. I came from a cow. The cow was walking around until one day some man came and killed the cow and I was taken to a factory and the machines made me into a round ball.

"And people have held me in their hands," said the coin. But the latest thing that I have bought is the football."

Yes that is right," said the football.

"What about me?" said the paper. Me paper, I have been cut down by men and had a massive journey down the river and then taken into a factory where they made me into paper. Also after that I went to a shop where this boy called Thomas came and bought me and in that show there were all kinds of pencils and pens, paper and ink. They told stories that were magnificent. They were always really exciting. They told them in the darkness every night."

"Yes, that is very true," said the pencil. "I had that journey with you. It was the most exciting thing that I had ever done. I was bought with you at the same time.

Then the window opened and the paper flew out and the window shut like a mouth shouting then closing like a big digger. The boy looked astonished. He couldn't believe his eyes. The paper went out, out to a little bird who made it in their nest up high. The pencil flew under the floorboards like a whirlwind.

And Thomas, the boy who had far to go? Well he grew p and became a footballer. He played football and when he was too old he had a granddaughter and told his stories about the pencil dancing and the pencil disappearing and the girl went to try and find the pencil and she found it right under the floorboards. The paper began to write...
